Chess for me plays an intrinsic role in my understanding of thought,
strategy and process. I am interested in the chessboard as a medium to
explore the reaches of expertise. Believing specialisation may limit
experimentation and refreshed perspective, I want to challenge masters
in their field. I developed the A.D.O. chessboard comprising 15x15
squares instead of 8x8, exponentially increasing the number of possible
outcomes to an overwhelming degree. The chessboard is designed to
challenge the understanding of the game by even the most hardened of
players, interrupting and resetting their relationship with expert
Artist and chess enthusiast Marcel Duchamp is a big inspiration for me,
in particular his ideas regarding chess and its purity of concept and how
that effected the development of his conceptual art:
“Chess is much purer than art in its social position. The chess pieces are
the block alphabet which shapes thoughts; and these thoughts, although
making a visual design on the chessboard, express their beauty
abstractly, like a Poem.” — Marcel Duchamp
